The BARF Diet for Dogs: What You Need to Know

What does BARF stand for?

The word BARF was originally created by Canadian Debbie Tripp as an acronym for 'Born Again Raw Feeders'.
It was then adapted by Veterinarian Dr Billinghurst to become 'Bone and Raw Food' and is now better known as 'Biologically Appropriate Raw Food'.

What is the BARF diet?

The BARF diet is a way of feeding animals according to their evolutionary diet.
It recreates how wolves and wild dogs eat in the wild.
Dogs are omnivores and have evolved to eat raw meat, fish, fruit and vegetables, NOT highly processed foods (like kibble and tinned food).
The BARF diet consists of raw meat, fish, fruit, vegetables, seeds, mushrooms, oils, all in a raw state, exactly how they would be found in nature.
This way of feeding, not only provides our dogs with an overall healthy and balanced diet but also brings them emotional and physical satisfaction.

Why choose the BARF diet?

The answer is very simple: because it's biologically appropriate.
Dogs evolved to eat raw meat, organs, and bones — not the highly processed kibble and tinned food created for human convenience. This unnatural diet is a major reason dogs have become one of the most cancer-prone mammals. It causes needless suffering for the dog and expensive vet bills for the owner.

What are the benefits of feeding a dog the BARF diet?

The list is long; here are a few in no particular order:

● stronger legs and bones
● less obesity
● better teeth
● significantly reduce flatulence
● harder and less smelly stools
● no more scooting bottoms on the ground
● no need to express anal glands
● healthier skin
● shinier coat
● less smelly breath
● balanced energy
● improved behaviour

and many more!!

Is the BARF diet safe for dogs?

Yes — when done correctly, the BARF diet is not only safe but it's the healthiest way to feed your dog. The key word is correctly. A poorly balanced raw diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies or imbalances that do more harm than good. This is why working with a certified BARF nutritionist is so important — to make sure your dog gets everything it needs, in the right amounts.

Raw feeding is a broad term that covers any diet based on uncooked ingredients. BARF is a specific and structured approach to raw feeding — one that carefully balances meat, organs, bones, fruit, vegetables, seeds, and oils to replicate a dog's ancestral diet as closely as possible. Not all raw feeding is BARF, and not all raw feeding is created equal.

Absolutely — in fact, starting your puppy on a BARF diet is one of the best things you can do for their long-term health. However, puppies have very specific nutritional requirements that differ significantly from those of adult dogs. Getting the balance right from the start is crucial for healthy bone development, growth, and immunity. A tailored puppy plan makes all the difference.

Yes, and for many dogs with health conditions, a properly tailored BARF diet can be truly transformative. Conditions such as allergies, skin problems, digestive issues, arthritis, and cancer can all benefit from the right raw feeding plan. However, a dog with a health condition needs a diet that is carefully personalised to their specific needs — this is not a one-size-fits-all situation.

The honest answer is: almost certainly yes, because the BARF diet is biologically appropriate for all dogs. But the right approach, portions, and ingredients will vary depending on your dog's age, breed, weight, activity level, and health history. The best way to find out exactly what your dog needs is through a personalised one-to-one consultation.

The BARF diet can actually be very cost-effective, especially when you factor in the possible long-term savings on vet bills. Many owners find that once their dog switches to raw, they spend significantly less on veterinary care, medications, and supplements. The cost of ingredients varies depending on your dog's size and where you source your food, and a consultation will help you find the most practical and affordable approach for your budget.

This is one of the most important questions to ask. A poorly planned raw diet — one with incorrect ratios, missing nutrients, or unsuitable ingredients — can cause harm over time, including bone and joint problems, organ damage, and nutritional deficiencies. This is precisely why guidance from a certified BARF nutritionist is so valuable. You wouldn't want to risk your dog's health on guesswork.

Every dog is different, but many owners start noticing changes within just a week or two of switching — things like a shinier coat, smaller and less smelly stools, fresher breath, and improved energy levels. For dogs with health conditions, improvements can take a little longer as the body heals and adjusts. Patience and consistency are key, and having expert support along the way makes the journey much smoother.

The best — and safest — way to get started is with a personalised consultation with a certified BARF nutritionist. Every dog is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn't work when it comes to raw feeding. At BARF time, we'll create a tailored feeding plan specifically for your dog, giving you the knowledge and confidence to feed them the diet nature intended.
